Programme Summary
The first week takes the form of the 2006 LMS Invited Lecture Series, a
series of 10 expository lectures on the Galois Theory of Differential and
Difference Equations delivered by Professor Singer and supplemented by courses
and discussions on other related topics. Lectures are aimed at graduate
students, post-docs and researchers from complementary areas.
The second week is a multi-disciplinary workshop which aims to promote
interdisciplinary research in the areas of Differential Algebra and Differential
Galois Theory, Model Theory, the Theory of Integrable Equations and Computer
Algebra applications. It is the first attempt to integrate these rather
distinct branches of Mathematics, focusing on the development of the algebraic
theory of differential and difference equations. Attendance at the workshop is
by invitation only.

This workshop is made possible by grants awarded to
ICMS from EPSRC
Mathematical Sciences Programme, the Scottish Higher Education
Funding Council and the London
Mathematical Society.
The London Mathematical Society funds Professor Singer's visit and the both the
LMS and Edinburgh Mathematical Society provided grants to assist the participation
of younger researchers in the first week. The Royal Society of Edinburgh
provided support for the programme as a whole.
