The aims of ICMS

ICMS was created in 1990 by Edinburgh University, Heriot-Watt University, International Centre for Theoretical Physics, City of Edinburgh District Council, Lothian Regional Council, Scottish Development Agency. It remains a joint venture of Heriot-Watt and Edinburgh universities. Its aims are:
  • to create an environment in which the mathematical sciences will develop in new directions.
  • to encourage and exploit those areas of mathematics that are of relevance to other sciences, industry and commerce.
  • to promote international collaboration, with particular reference to mathematicians working in developing countries.

Activities

  • Research programmes and workshops, which bring together researchers with different backgrounds and different perspective, who might otherwise not have the opportunity to work together.
  • Courses of various types for wide audiences, including courses for post-graduates, and courses aimed at participants from industry and commerce. Participation by mathematicians from the developing world is particularly welcomed.
  • Lectures and other activities aimed at the general public, with the aim promoting the importance and relevance of mathematics.

Offices

ICMS is headquartered at 14 India Street, just to the north of the centre of Edinburgh. The house is the birthplace of James Clerk Maxwell and is rented from the James Clerk Maxwell Foundation.

The dining room on the ground floor is houses an exhibition on Clerk Maxwell and is used by ICMS for meetings and conference lunches. The rear office has been converted into a small library for the use of visitors.

The first floor drawing room has been converted into seminar room which can seat 30 comfortably.

The upper floor comprises the ICMS offices and two rooms for the use of scientific visitors. There are ample computer facilities including SUN workstations and multi-media PCs. All machines have permanent internet connections.

Management

The overall strategic planning of ICMS is the responsibility of the ICMS Board, acting through an Executive Committee. In planning the scientific programme of ICMS the Executive Committee is advised by a Programme Committee, reflecting a broad spread of mathematical interest. The Scientific Director is Professor Angus Macintyre. The day to day running of ICMS is in the hands of the Executive Director, Tracey Dart.

Call for proposals

Proposals are invited for research programmes, workshops and courses on any topic in the mathematical sciences. Whilst all new ideas are welcome, and will be developed, we are particularly eager to have suggestions for meetings (of various types, sizes and duration) in numerical analysis, PDEs, financial mathematics and robotics. Proposals of an interdisciplinary nature are particularly encouraged.

(ICMS also runs a Short Meeting Scheme, currently restricted to members of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt Universities. More information can be found on the website.)

Proposals are welcome at all times, initially in the form of a preliminary proposal – no longer than the equivalent of two sides of A4 – which should include the following:
  • A discussion of the objectives of the meeting
  • Brief background information on the area of mathematics
  • The proposed scientific organising committee
  • A list of other key participants
  • Other information such as: the probable dates, size and duration of the meeting; its location; sources of funding, other than EPSRC.
Please send proposals to: Professor A J Macintyre FRS, Scientific Director, ICMS (Proposal), 14 India Street, Edinburgh, EH3 6EZ UK (Tel: 0131 220 1777, Fax: 0131 220 1053), or by email to: icms@maths.ed.ac.uk.

The Scientific Director will convey to you the Programme Committee’s reaction to your proposal. Should these prove positive he will contact you in order to discuss the enlargement of the proposal with a view to a full proposal being submitted to the next meeting of the ICMS Programme Committee, which meets in early summer. If you have any general enquiries, for example about ICMS or the procedures for submitting a proposal, please contact the ICMS office.
