Knowledge Exchange Community Meeting - Industrial Maths in Action

Sep 19, 2017 - Sep 21, 2017

Following on from the successful 2015 KE Community Meeting, this meeting is designed for both academic mathematicians and industrial scientists and will focus on how to do industrial maths with a particular emphasis on how to develop contacts between academia and industry and how to ensure that mathematical results are carried through to implementation. The first two days will consist of successful case studies which describe the whole process and discussions on how to avoid common pitfalls. The third day will be a 'ministudy group' at which a number of specific problems will be brainstormed in small groups.

The meeting is scheduled to start on the afternoon of Tuesday 19 September, and finish early afternoon of Thursday 21 September.   We are delighted to have the support of European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry, ECMI.

  • Day 1 will focus on the Review of Knowledge Exchange in the Mathematical Sciences currently underway in the UK. Presentations and discussion will be used to feed the review and an interim update on progress will be given.

  • Day 2 will focus on the challenge of making the maths research useful to the end user. Previously described at navigating the valley of death, Case studies will be used to highlight the transition from problem identification through to successful implementation. These will feed into a discussion of difficulties/challenges that need to be addressed to make this transition successful. Industrial viewpoints of challenges are anticipated. A networking activity is planned for the early evening.

  • Day 3 will provide an opportunity to experience one of the mechanisms for industry engagement widely used across the KE community. Study groups were being used as a model in a number of universities to engage with companies and strengthen relationships. During one of the discussion groups it was highlighted that whilst many within the community were familiar (and strong advocates) for study groups, others were unfamiliar with the format and potential benefits. This meeting will provide a small taster of the study group format. It is planned to run this ministudy group session focussing on problems from areas not always directly associated with the established study group format.
