This workshop, closely related to D’Arcy Thompson’s legacy, will focus on recent advances, mathematical challenges, and promising new directions in research on mathematical aspects of form in living systems. Stochastic models and topological approaches, including knot theory, have been employed to study shape evolution, for example the structure of the DNA. Cellular and developmental biology have recently seen a surge in the use of mathematical models and new conceptual frameworks for problems such as the self-organisation of the cytoskeleton or gradients of morphogens in embryos. However, the constitutive features of living systems pose unique technical and conceptual challenges. Some of these challenges concern construction of a multiscale framework for agent-based models, and employing non-equilibrium physics to address non-conservative nature of living systems, using continuum models such as the (visco)elasticity of growing bodies.

This workshop is a satellite workshop of the "Growth form and self-organisation" programme running at the Isaac Newton Institute from August-December 2017.

This workshop is preceded by an interdisciplinary 3-day conference celebrating the centenary of On Growth and Form, ON GROWTH AND FORM 100



The workshop will commence on the morning of Monday 16 October and close at lunchtime on Friday 20 October 2017. 




  • Invited Speakers and Organisers will shortly receive an invitation via email from ICMS.   This email will contain a personalised link to a Speaker registration form. 
  • Invited Speakers are asked to use the invitation link to register, rather than the public application form as this contains very different information.   
  • ICMS will organise accommodation for all Invited Speakers and Organisers.         



  • For all other participants the APPLICATION FORM is now open, with a closing date of Friday 8 September 2017.  
  • Please note that you are expected to arrange and pay for your own accommodation and travel.   Please do not book until you hear if your application has been accepted.   
  • A small amount of money may be available to support travel to Dundee.   If you would like to be considered for funding, please indicate this on the application form. 
  • The opportunity to present a poster or contributed talk if offered.  Again, please indicate this on the application form.
  • It is anticipated that an excursion will be arranged for the Wednesday afternoon.  Details will follow.
  • There will be a workshop dinner one evening (details yet to be decided).   The cost will be 40 GBP.   If you are interested in attending, please indicate this on the form. 
  • A registration of 100 GBP is payable by all accepted applicants (see below).

This event will take place at the University of Dundee.   Talks will be in Lecture Theatre 4 of the Dalhousie Building - Number 14 on this map for the conference venue (please note that the campus map has two pages, the second page being containing the key to the map numbers).   The main entrance is opposite the 27 on the map, the lecture theatre is directly on the left coming through the main entrance.        (For information, The Queens hotel is next to number 52 on the map).
