UK Graduate Modelling Camp

20 Jun 2024

Registration is now open for this year's UK Graduate Modelling Camp delivered by our colleagues at the Newton Gateway to Mathematics.

The UK's Graduate Modelling Camp will take place this year from Monday 23 September to Friday 27 September 2024. The Camp will be an in-person event at Centre for Mathematical Sciences, University of Cambridge.

The Graduate Modelling Camp caters for early career mathematicians, usually those in the first and second years of their doctoral studies, who are keen to get hands-on experience of mathematical modelling.

As in previous years, the Newton Gateway to Mathematics is working in partnership with Professor Chris Breward to facilitate this year’s event. This Modelling Camp is being funded by the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford.

A key aim of the modelling camp is to provide early career mathematicians with experience of hands-on mathematical modelling under the guidance of experienced instructors and mentors. This involves working on real-world challenges from industry or science as part of a team. The camp is open to all mathematical sciences PhD students and is designed to promote a broad range of problem-solving skills, such as problem assessment, model building, analysis, scientific computation, & critical assessment of solutions. The camp provides experiential learning, rather than delivering any formal training.

At the start of the camp, the mentors present a range of challenges. The participants then form teams to tackle a chosen challenge for the remainder of the camp. Scientific communication is an important part of the camp and participants will be expected to make presentations on the final day.

Further information, including a list of mentors and challenges, will be made available soon via the event web page.

The deadline for registrations is Wednesday 17th July 2024. Please note that places are limited and participant accommodation and meals are fully funded. We cannot cover participant travel.

Please do not hesitate to contact the Newton Gateway team via gateway@newton.ac.uk if you have any queries.
