Public Talk: Numbers in the News

 11 Oct 2022
1800 BST

Bayes Centre, Edinburgh

About:

This public talk was part of the Diverse Voices of Maths series, to highlight the diversity of maths and mathematicians.

About the talk:

In a world of fake news it's important to be able to think critically about what we are told in the media. This thought provoking talk featuring audience games and experiments took us on an amusing tour of misleading or misunderstood statistics and number facts from real news stories. The talk was entertaining and empowered you to make informed life decisions, by the power of maths.

About the speaker:

Zoe Griffiths (she/her) is a mathematician who travels the UK and internationally giving talks and workshops in schools (through Think Maths), at science festivals and at comedy nights. Zoe has talked about maths in places ranging from the Cheltenham Science Festival to BBC Radio 4. Before entering the world of maths communication, Zoe worked as a classroom maths teacher and is still a teacher at heart.
