Public Talk: How to Cure Maths Anxiety

 18 Oct 2022
1800 BST

Bayes Centre, Edinburgh

About:

This public talk was part of the Diverse Voices of Maths series, to highlight the diversity of maths and mathematicians!

About the talk:

Of all school subjects, mathematics seems to be the one that's most likely to prompt fear and feelings of inadequacy in people, many years after they've left school behind them. In this talk, we looked at some of the reasons behind maths anxiety and looked at the sort of mathematical activity that can cure it. Whether you are maths-anxious or want to convert the mathsphobes in your life to be the next Fields Medallists, this talk is for you!

About the speaker:

Alison Kiddle (they/them) is a maths education specialist and maths communicator from the East of England. They started their career as a maths teacher before working at the University of Cambridge's Millennium Mathematics project for over a decade, writing mathematical content for the NRICH website and working with teachers and students around the UK and beyond. Now they work on a freelance basis on a variety of projects, from supply teaching in Cambridgeshire schools, tutoring, and working with exam boards to leading workshops on mathematical origami and writing puzzles for New Scientist. Alison was diagnosed as autistic in their mid-thirties.
