Geometric Rigidity, Graphic Statics and the design of gridshells

Dr Bernd Schulze, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Lancaster.

Partner: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM)

Bernd Schulze, Reader in Mathematics at Lancaster University, has been awarded funding from the ICMS Knowledge Exchange Catalyst Programme to collaborate with William Baker, Cameron Millar and Toby Mitchell from the architectural and engineering firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) for 12 months. The project aims to develop new design tools for light-weight, long-span structures, such as gridshell roofs and cable net structures, using mathematical methods from Geometric Rigidity Theory and Graphic Statics. A workshop will be held towards the end of the project to encourage further Knowledge Exchange in this area.
