Predictive modelling of chronic kidney disease progression: Identifying high-risk patients approaching end-stage renal disease
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a major public health problem with silent disease progression. Gradual decline in kidney function in CKD patients can lead to End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) requiring kidney transplants. Early intervention in CKD patients can lead to an improved quality of life by slowing down the progression of CKD and healthcare expenses. Predictive models can aid in identifying patients requiring intensive management of CKD (e.g. through higher doses of medication) as well as provide insights on how to manage and screen outpatients with CKD.
Patients with CKD can be classified into stages (stage 1 to stage 5/ESRD) based on their kidney function and protein in the urine. This project will focus on developing machine learning models to predict the progression of CKD from one stage to the other using a cohort-based analysis, each cohort defined by the CKD stage of patients at baseline. By using a dataset(s) encompassing demographic details, clinical parameters, laboratory results, we would like to identify the critical factors and patterns that contribute to the advancement from one CKD stage to the next, especially targeting the progression to ESRD.
The primary outcome of this project will be a predictive model that can assist in identifying high-risk patients at an early stage, enabling timely and targeted interventions to slow the progression of CKD and improve patient outcomes.

KE Hub Triage Workshops are informal discussion sessions where one B.I.G. Partner presents a challenge they are currently facing, with the aim of determining:
- What, if any, mathematical sciences approaches can be used to address the challenge?
- Who from the mathematical sciences community would like to take on the challenge?
- What mechanisms are most appropriate for driving the challenge forward?
The purpose of these workshops is to allow the B.I.G. Partner to engage directly with academic mathematical scientists to probe the scientific content of their proposed challenge.
