ICMS Modelling Camp 2025

 28 Apr - 02 May 2025

ICMS, Bayes Centre, Edinburgh

 Enquiries

Organisers:

  • Lauren Hyndman, ICMS
  • Xander O'Neill, Heriot-Watt University and The Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences

About:

The ICMS Modelling Camp is a multi-day in-person workshop where several challenges are presented by industry partners or academic experts in knowledge exchange. Participants are divided into teams to develop ideas to tackle the challenges, and each team presents their progress at the end of the camp.

Modelling camps aim to:

  • Train students and early career researchers to engage in study groups and similar activities
  • Offer essential skills training (e.g. teamwork, coping outside of one's comfort zone, introduction to modelling methodology, report writing, communication and presentation skills)
  • Provide an opportunity to learn how different branches of the mathematical sciences can be applied in various industrial settings

Participation in a modelling camp is excellent preparation for attending a study group. The European Study Groups with Industry (ESGI) are held annually all across Europe, with the UK hosting one every year.

Challenges:

  1. Predicting house prices in Birmingham: A data-driven challenge
    Facilitator: Diwei Zhou, Loughborough University
    Challenge holder: Three Doctors Lets
  2. To help understand the flow of people using A&E services
Facilitator: Xander O'Neill, Heriot-Watt University and The Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences
Challenge holder: Public Health Scotland (Hannah Jones, Ken Nicholson)
  3. Modelling inflation risk
Facilitator: Edilson Arruda, University of Southampton
Challenge holder: Hymans Robertson (Joe Meagher, Louise Mousten)
  4. Early warning system for assessing patient health
Facilitator: Ann Smith, University of Huddersfield
Challenge holder: These Hands Academy (Tara Marshall)
  5. Splitting train tickets: searching sparse data for the lowest prices
Facilitator: Lisa Kreusser, University of Bath
Challenge holder: Trainline (Alex Wilkes, Reda Kechouri)
