About:

Retreat for Women in Applied Mathematics - South East Asia (RWAM-SE2025) will be held for the first time in South East Asia as an international scientific, networking and collaborative forum for female applied mathematicians (applied mathematics to be interpreted broadly). The RWAM-SE retreat hosted at the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics is inspired by the successful UK-based RWAM initiative funded by the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Edinburgh. The retreat’s goals include promoting gender equality, showcasing diverse applied mathematics disciplines, and fostering bilateral collaboration between UK and South East Asia. Activities will encompass keynote lecturers, contributed talks, poster session, round table discussion on academic and career development. It aims to integrate participants from various fields, including climate change, optimization, machine learning, and mathematical biology, ensuring a scientifically diverse audience. The retreat aligns with the ICMS Mathematics for Humanity Worldwide initiative, focusing on equality, diversity, and inclusivity (EDI) in mathematical sciences. It seeks to establish a sustainable global network of female mathematicians, promote international research collaborations, and increase visibility for applied mathematics in the region. The retreat is funded in part from the  gnereous donation of XTX Markets.

Keynote speakers:

  • Myoungjean Bae, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology
  • Apala Majumdar, University of Strathclyde
  • Pham Thi Thanh Nga, Vietnam Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology and Climate Change
  • Catherine Powell, Univeristy of Manchester
