About:
There has been a long history of interaction between the mathematics community and industry. This generally took place at only a few centres of excellence, and focused on traditional areas such as engineering. One of the main mechanisms for undertaking this interaction in the UK has been through study groups. Due to a number of factors, and driven by pressures from REF, EPSRC and local university demands engagement between mathematicians and ‘users' outside academia has grown significantly in recent years. There is now a much greater acceptance of the value of such activity and most mathematics departments are striving to build new links.
To assist the collective efforts of the mathematics community to build its knowledge transfer expertise ICMS planned this event. The broad aims were to bring the community together, overview what is available, highlight what is going on, indicate what resources people can access, find out what works well and what is missing, discuss what we could do together and consider and highlight other initiatives and opportunities.
